Endowed Funds
The mission and the scientific programs of the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery are supported in part by endowment funds. A description of the Funds that Support the Academy’s Programs are listed here.
The Philadelphia Academy of Surgery is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation and all contributions are tax-deductible.
Resident Participation Fund
Invitations for surgical residents in the training programs in the Delaware Valley to participate fully in the meetings of the Fellows as guests of the Academy have been supported by individual Fellows. For those without the opportunity to invite trainees, donations can be made (in $75 increments) to support resident participation, particularly those participating in the Intra-City Grand Rounds and in the Resident Research Competition. Fellows or departments contributing to the Resident Participation Fund will be acknowledged at the Academy meeting when their donations are used. A $1500 donation entitles Fellows or departments to have a permanently named endowment to support one resident invitation each year in perpetuity.
Samuel D. Gross Research Prize Fund
The Gross Research Prize Fund was established by the Academy’s founder, Samuel D. Gross, in his will, upon his death in 1884 and supplemented by the John F. Connelly Foundation in 1988. The fund is used to support the Samuel D. Gross Prize, awarded every five years for the best original research in surgery by an American citizen and one of the most prestigious surgical research prizes in the nation. The fund is also used to support the Resident Research Awards, given yearly.
William Erb Lectureship Fund
The Erb Lectureship Fund was established by William Erb, Sr., a former President of the Academy, and supplemented by his family. It is used to support an invited speaker to come to Philadelphia and present to the Academy.
Rhoads Resident Fund
Initiated by broad support from the Fellows of the Academy in 2003, with added support by the Rhoads family and the Buckingham Mountain Foundation, the Rhoads Resident Fund assures that residents from the surgical training programs in the Delaware Valley can attend the annual Rhoads Oration as guests of the Academy.
Rhoads Oration Fund
The Rhoads Oration Fund was established by the family of Jonathan Rhoads, Sr. in 2007, with the assistance of the Buckingham Mountain Foundation, to support the Rhoads Oration, the annual presentation by a distinguished Fellow of the Academy, in recognition of the honor bestowed on Dr. Rhoads by the Academy in naming the Annual Oration in his honor for his decades of leadership of surgery in Philadelphia.
John R. Clarke Lectureship Fund
The Clarke Lectureship Fund was initiated by President Chris Tzarnas and Fellows of the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery to recognize John R. Clarke for over 20 years of dedicated service to the Academy, from 1995 through 2015, as Secretary, Vice President, President, and the Academy’s first Executive Director. Subsequent to this honor, Dr. Clarke endowed the lecture to annually support speakers for the scientific program.
